Many people are now choosing an electric car when they are considering changing their vehicle as the prices begin to be within the reach of the average person and the cost of fuel has increased so much. Looking after the electric car battery is vital to problem-free motoring so what are the key things electric car owners should know?

Although fast charging is necessary in some circumstances, regular use should be avoided as fast charging presses large amounts of current into the batteries over a short period of time which can strain the battery and cause them to have a reduced life.

When possible avoid keeping the vehicle at full charge unless you are going on a long journey but rather change the settings so that the car charges to about 80%. Much like a conventional car it is beneficial to take regular short journeys so that the car is not sitting unused for prolonged periods this will help against draining the battery unnecessarily. However, do not run the battery down until it is completely flat as this can cause the battery to deteriorate over time.

Finally take care when parking your vehicle on hot days and try to find a shady parking spot so that the battery does not get excessively hot. If it is possible to find a charge point to use then the battery’s thermal management system will kick in and keep the battery at a safe temperature.
