Automatic cars have been around for some time now and they have many advantages. For some people, they are their only way of being able to drive as if they have a medical condition that means they cannot drive a manual vehicle, then being able to drive an automatic give them back some freedom.

There are many pros and cons of an automatic vehicle. They can be great in crawling traffic where you do not need to keep switching gears. In the drive position they constantly pull forward so you only need to put your foot on and off the break to move at a slow pace.

If you experience a breakdown then having an automatic vehicle can make everything a little more complicated. You will not be able to push the vehicle out of the way unless you can find a way of putting the car in to neutral. If you have to be towed then this requires specialist equipment which is often much more costly than recovering a manual vehicle.

If you took your driving test in an automatic car then you will only be able to drive a manual unless you later take another test for a manual vehicle.
