The question on everyone’s lips when considering buying an electric car is often will the range achieved from a single charge be enough for my needs? This used to be a feasible argument up until recently when it has been shown that newer electric cars have a range exceeding two hundred miles from a charge. So, what are the current benefits and drawbacks for the customer thinking of switching?
It goes without saying that the benefit to the environment is probably the main reason why the majority of people consider an electric car followed closely by the cheaper running costs. For those of us that live in a city where air pollution is a significant problem it is a daily reminder of the environmental impact our diesel and petrol cars are having however it is these very people that face the biggest challenge. Many city dwellers do not have a driveway or a garage so charging their car may be a significant issue for them. Until the infrastructure is in place to allow these people to charge their cars at the roadside, the uptake of electric cars in our cities may be restricted. Government bodies will need to consider these issues in town planning models if they want to move forward in this technology.
