How important are car brands?

When it comes to choosing the make of the car you are going to buy, very often your decision is based on the reputation a certain manufacturer has. Building up a reliable and trustworthy brand is vital within the car industry where there is so much competition for business and where people are spending large sums of money.

Some manufacturers have had to work hard over the years to rebuild their reputation, for example, Skoda was renowned for building poor quality cars that looked ugly and were very unreliable, but following their take over by Volkswagen in the late nineties, they invested a lot in to their marketing and worked hard to build up a new customer base. They have now managed to completely turn around their reputation and have a large market share of the car industry and many people are happy to buy and drive a Skoda. Volkswagen took a hit on their brand following the issue with the emissions of their cars. They are still having to work hard to regain the trust of their customers.

Building up a brand can take many years and often requires a lot of investment in terms of money and time, but if done correctly can be the difference between a manufacturer selling and not.
